This is the reference passthrough mod that ships as an example inside universal-modder, the open-source toolkit that lets Claude Code mod almost any PC game. It is also the base several other GTA V mashups were built from, including the Wither Storm version.
What it does
- Build in Los Santos. Placed Minecraft blocks become invisible GTA props, so people and cars stop at your walls.
- Explosions in both games. TNT and creepers trigger real GTA explosions.
- Minecraft weapons with GTA effects. Crossbow fireworks burst as GTA rockets, arrows land as GTA bullets, a sword swing sends people flying.
- Elytra flight with a GTA chase camera, mobs versus police, and a Nether portal that turns the ground to netherrack and the sky red.
How it works
GTA V’s camera drives Minecraft’s camera. A ScriptHookV script probes GTA’s ground around you and sends it to Minecraft as invisible barrier blocks, so everything rests on GTA’s world. Minecraft’s picture (colour and depth) is composited into GTA’s frame with a ReShade add-on, so blocks correctly hide behind GTA buildings. A live bridge in its purest form.
What you need
- GTA V Legacy in Story Mode (tested on Steam build 3889 with ScriptHookV 3889.0 and ReShade 6.8.0). Not GTA Online.
- Minecraft: Java Edition with Fabric.
- Build tools to compile both halves yourself. It lives in the universal-modder repository under
examples/minecraft-gta5-passthrough.
Setup reality check
There is no one-click installer: this is an example for people building their own mods, with configurable paths. If you just want to play something today, look at a project marked Playable instead. Community forks exist for GTA V Enhanced, but we only link the original until we have checked them.
